Saved excel workbook does not open from desktop icon

When I click on the saved EXCEL document on my desktop - Excel opens with no
workbook - just grey screen (DONE in bottom left corner). I am able to
access workbook via opening a file from this grey screen, however, I can not
find how to correct this error. Help much appreciated. I think my 4 year
old may have clicked on something.

    Hi,

maybe the columns or rows, are hide, try to

FORMAT | COLUMNS | UNHIDE. or
    FORMAT | ROWS | UNHIDE.

If you put a copy of the .xls file elsewhere on your system (as in My
Documents) can you double-click on the file in Windows Explorer and get it to
open? Or must you always open it from within Excel.

I've seen this kind of situation before, usually after installation of 3rd
party software that had hooks into Excel to export other data (bookkeeping to
be specific). We could open any file from within Excel, but not in any other
'shortcut' fashion - as in clicking on a shortcut to it or double-clicking
the filename in its folder. Excel would open, but it would not open the
workbook itself. I was never able to easily fix it, and had to reinstall
Excel on the affected systems to overcome the problem.

So one thing to think about is have you recently installed any software that
tries to interact with Excel? Perhaps by offering an Excel workbook as one
    of its output options?
