When I convert a date to a weekday, Sunday becomes Thursday?

I am working with an Excel 2003 spreadsheet that has several date columns ,
mm/dd/yy which I need to add a column and convert to the correct day of the
week. Every time I try to do this I get Thursday for Sunday, why?
