    help on excel formula

is possible to write a formula to count the number of hours worked in each
    dept.
the number of hours worked in each dept can vary from 1 to 7 vice versa.
eg) if a1 is 3 cash 4 stock , i want a2 to return with the value 3 and a3
to return with the value 4 and a2 and if a1 is cash then a2 to return with
the value 8 and if a1 is stock then a3 to reurn with the value 8.

    can anyone help

    some questions
is the data in a1 exactly like you type ie 3space"cash"space4space"stock"
a formula can be built to extract the hours to a2 and a3 ,but then i get
    lost,what is the logic that says you need 8 =cash and 8 =stock or 8 from 4+3?

no, the data in a1 should read 3cash 4stock and if a1 is "cash" , i want a2
to return with value of 8 and if a1 is "stock" , i want a3 to return with
    value of 8.
