also be written
=POWER(A1,2)

The answer to the first part of the question is that "^" is the carat
character, and, in XL formulas, represents exponentiation. So
=2^3 returns 8 (2 to the 3rd power)
=3^2 returns 9 (3 to the 2nd power)
