CARET or ^, as in CTRL but CTRL !!! ???

In Office Excel 2003, when I type WORD the cell displays ^WORD. Why? How do I
get it back to normal? The program does other erratic nonsense, but for now
    focus on the mysterious caret.

    Thanks for the help,

    Dutch

Is it an autocorrect item (Tools>Autocorrect Options)?

Thanks Bob, but it is not an autocorrect item.

^ is the shortcut key for centering text in old (or current???) versions of
    Lotus 123.

I'd turn off all those transition settings under:
    tools|options|transition tab

    to see if it helped.
