How do I set up formulas with letters and numbers?

I am creating a spreadsheet, and I am having a difficult time trying to
configure a formula that will recognize both letters & numbers?? Anyone have
any suggestions that might help me rectify this situation????

And what would your formula *do* with those letters and numbers?

While I'm sure the description below is crystal clear to you, it's not
likely to be intuitively obvious to anyone else.

I am trying to calculate vacation & sick time I believe that I have a formula
that will calculate the text for my vacation time; however, our sick time may
be utilized in incriments of time where vacation time may only be used for a
full 8 hour shift. With this clarification, do you have a valuable
    suggestion??
