Formula 'No Show' - Why Result Only

In Excel 97:

The formula isn't showing in the formula bar / line when I pick the cell that is supposed to contain a FORMULA! Only the result of the formula shows. I cannot copy/paste the formula to other cells because Excel thinks it (the formula) is not there.

Is this a formatting issue - OR - is there a setting to 'show the formula' - INSTEAD -of just the result?

My assumption is that the formulae has been copied over. It could also be that the sheet is protected with the cells protection format set to hidden.
