Sometimes what looks like spaces in excel are really those non-breaking HTML
spaces.
David McRitchie has some code to fix this kind of thing at:
http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/join.htm#trimall
(look for "Sub Trimall()")
And if you're new to macros, you may want to read David's intro:
http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/getstarted.htm
You can get a copy of Chip Pearson's CellView addin.
http://www.cpearson.com/excel/CellView.htm
It'll show you what you have in the cell.
