Adding minutes and seconds

In column D I have series of running times , all in minutes and seconds.

In column F , I'd like to make a running total of how many minutes and seconds the times in D add up to. Perhaps convert to hours , minutes and seconds when the total goes over 60.

Can someone suggest a formula and configuration to achieve this?

Excel seems especially mysterious over this.

It's the formatting that I find trips this up.

Excel thinks I'm putting times of the day.

So in my sample file at

Instead of adding the minutes and seconds from $D$5 to D11 and making 26m38s , it's making it 02:38 in the morning...

In column D are the values in hours and minutes.

Because it should be minutes and seconds you need to devide these values by 60.

Please try in F5 and copy down:

and format the cells in the desired format.

In attached example there are 3 examples with different formatting:

Column F: Custom format: [m]:ss
Column G: Custom format: h:mm:ss
Column H: Custom format: m:ss + conditional formatting h:mm:ss for values over an hour.
