Question What is the excel normalization calculation to put different scaled values on same graph?

When we have 2 different variables and put first one on primary axis and second one on secondary axis, excel adjusts them so they can be visually compared on the same graph. I do not know how precise is that since it depends on the range but can anyone point me what is the normalization calculation that excel performs, how does it scale visually the variables on the same space? Thank you.

It does not adjust them so they can be visually compared. It just sets the scales separately based on the range of the data in each series. It is the same you would get if you had each data series in a separate graph.

Can you point me where I can read in detail about how it sets the scales and defines the ranges, please. I am interested in the proccess behind it, whatever it is that it does. Like the formula of how it scales and defines ranges etc. Thanks.

Microsoft does not publish rationale articles about how or why they designed things in a certain way. There are dozens of things like this about Excel (maybe hundreds) that Microsoft has never explained (e.g., why certain functions do not work when referencing a closed workbook). I know how charts work based on 30 years of experience using Excel. If you want more of an explanation I'm afraid you will have to do an internet search for specifically what you are looking for. Or perhaps perform a series of experiments until you can predict the behavior.

At least as far as I am aware of, I also never came across that type of documentation.

But since you can change the axis from automatic scaling (where it's unclear how exactly this is done?) to manual, the question becomes almost obsolete.
From trial and error you potentially can infer how this works: e.g. play around with the gridlines, min, max values of the underlying data set and try to understand how much buffer is always included above and below the min/max values etc.
This should probably get you a bit along the working of the algorithm used.

Jon Peltier has this article that attempts to explain Excel's automatic algorithms. https://peltiertech.com/how-excel-ca...t-axis-limits/

It's a bit of a pity that these MS knowledge database links no longer work and it seems they've been take offline altogether?
