day clock start , stop conditional formula needed

Hi, Newby here.
Looking for a couple of formulas.
I want to put in a "submitted date" that starts counting days in the "days in" cell, until I put in a "returned" date. Then I want to stop the "days in" clock to record the days. See pic.

Where:
* SUBMITTED is column A in Date format, and
* DAYS IN is column C in Number format, and
* RETURNED is column C in Date format

Put this into B2, and drag down:

when you enter date in the A cell, the counter will be entered in cell B, and once you enter date into cell C then the counter will be the difference between A and C

if there is no value in cell C, then entering anything into another cell can trigger the cell B to recalculate/update
