Question Merged cells via linked formulas

    Hi everybody,

It is my first time doing this and I'm not sure I'm at the right address or if it is even possible but let's try

So I have 2 documents and I need data from 1 document in the other one. In the retrieving excel I have merged cells and when I link that document to the document where I want the data, I only get the first cell with the info.

To explain a little bit better, in document A I have A1:C1 a merged cell, with the formula =if(A<>"";A;"") I link the document A to the other document B but in document B, only in A1 the data appears, I would like to have the data in A1:C1, like in document A. I hope it is a bit clear because it seems like I can't add any pictures to clarify a bit more...

Is there a way to create this? Even if it is not with merged cells?

    Thank you in advance,
    Aline

Re: Merged cells via linked formulas

=if(A<>"";A;"") is not a valid formula but will return A1 by default

    but this is ...

    =if(A1<>"";A1;"")

Merged cells should be avoided like the plague

See yellow banner on how to post a sample workbook.

    Hi JohnTople,

You are right,I had indeed =if(A1<>"";A1;"") as a formula and not =if(A<>"";A;"").

I've added a document that hopefully explains what I want to do.

    thank you,

Re: Merged cells via linked formulas

As @John has said - avoid merged cells.
Looking in both sheets you have a clear illustration why - look at what is happening with C3:D3 in each sheet.
    Torachan,

Mission statement; Promote the use of Tables, Outlaw the use of 'merged cells' and 'RowSource'.

    Hi Torachan,

Is there another way of working that you can propose to me?
Without merged cells but with the same outcome and where C3:D3 would be as I need?

    Thanks

I haven't a clue why you want to reproduce Sheet A in Sheet B but it cannot be done using formulae. A simple option is simply to make a copy of Sheet A. The only other choice is to use VBA .

But to repeat: avoid merged cells!!

Re: Merged cells via linked formulas

Because normally I have more documents to retrieve data from and in Company B, there is as well data. I wanted to make an easy representation.
The data of company can change, so that is why I can't just make a copy or I need to make a copy every week.

If not necessary, I won't use merged cells but I don't know any other way

Re: Merged cells via linked formulas

You appear to be wanting to "paint a picture" of the data rather than use it to do any calculations so the only option is to use VBA.

And your reply intimates your sample is a simplification of the real situation

Yes, if it possible to have that, it would be ideal. Would it be possible to show me how to do that via VBA ?

    thank you in advance
