COUNTIF Function. Adding everything but

Evening All, how do I use the COUNTIF function to count all cells with different random characters except ones with an x in please? Can't get my head round it.

A1 = x
A2 = 6
A3 = ?
A4 = x
A5 = £

Result 3

Try this:

=COUNTIF(A1:A5,"<>x")
