If x then y for text formula

Hello - Thanks in advance for your help.

I have a spreadsheet with text and numerical columns and need a formula to auto-populate a related cell depending on the value of another cell.

For example, if D1 value is "Auto" I want E1 to auto-populate with "Operating Expense". There are several different values in column D which I'd tie to different values for column E. Seems like a rule that I could set up but I'm not sure where to do that.

    Attached is a sample sheet.

    Thank you!
    Sarah

Very normal place to use a lookup table.

    In E1:
Please Login or Register to view this content.
Where K1:K10 are the input values ("Auto" etc) and then L1:L10 are the matching output values ("Operating Expense"). Those can be a reference to another sheet, or wherever else you want to have them, they don't actually have to be in K1:L10 specifically.
