Question Trying to make a "Daily Log Sheet", that calculates number and hours for activity

    Dear Forum-

I would greatly appreciate any assistance in a way to accomplish my goal with a spreadsheet.

I'm trying to make a running, daily log, where the user is presented with a drop down list of activities to choose from, and then they just need to put the date, and how long they did that activity. So in a given day, they may have 3 or 4 entries, with various activities and times allotted.

Then I would like it to calculate how many times they have done each activity, and how many hours they have done each activity, in total.

I have a visual backbone (attached) of what I'm trying to do, and I can get my "IF" statements working for a singular activity, but as far as counting the number of each activity, is where I the wheels fall off for me, among other issues!

For example, I can successfully do an IF function, say IF cell "blank" equals "someactivity" then return a "1", if not, return a "0". I guess I would like to know if you can do an IF function that will check for multiple values... and then give you a count for each one going down the log? Or am I just going to have to do a billion hidden function cells that will eventually do all the math behind the scenes.

I've attached what I have so far and hopefully it's not too pitiful.

    Thank for any help!

    Sincerely,
    Jim

Sorry, the one I attached didn't have the start of my formulas table method.

I think I have it, my solution isn't very elegant, but I'm sure I'll get it eventually.

I think a data table and a pivot table(s) built from that for reports will solve your dilemma. You can record all entries in one spot and just create a pivot table for a report as needed. I have (hopefully) attached your sheet with 2 new tabs at the end as an example.

Wow, I definitely didn't know you could do things like that. I'll need to study up to reverse engineer your method! Thanks for taking the time to do that and maybe I can incorporate some of those activities into our real training! haha.

Thumbs up Re: Trying to make a "Daily Log Sheet", that calculates number and hours for activity

Well I quickly realized I'm not smart enough for pivot tables and elegant solutions... so I went caveman on it, but so far it is working as I wanted.

I've attached the solution I went with, thanks for all the help and advice, I was just
in a hurry and needed to get something that worked right away that I could understand.

Yall have a great week and thanks again.

Question Re: Trying to make a "Daily Log Sheet", that calculates number and hours for activity

OK, I have a new problem, The Daily Log is working great (blank version attached), but now my supervision also wants to be able to have us turn in a weekly stat sheet... in addition to the quarterly and yearly sheets.

I've added a "Weekly Log Generator" tab... which I was hoping I could do some magic with as follows:

The user would enter in the beginning and ending date of the particular work week they want to generate a report for... and then the stat sheet would be filled out appropriately on that tab, so they could print it out.

Given my current caveman spreadsheet setup, any ideas on how to accomplish that without starting from scratch? I'm sure I should have gone with the data table suggestion early on!

    Thanks for any help!

Ok, well I think I may have stumbled upon another "ugly" way to get what I want, so I'll see how it goes and I'll post my success or failure for prosperity.

I still may need assistance, but I didn't want any of yall to come up with a high-speed solution for a moron like me, unless I really end up needing it, thanks!
