Much more simpler than the answer I came up with scouring the internet

=SUMPRODUCT((LEN($a$1:$a$1000)-LEN(SUBSTITUTE($a$1:$a$1000,d1,"")))/LEN(d1))

if D1 was the capital word I was looking for
