Question Need some help dividing a list of values into groups with equal sums

Was going to see if you guys could help me with something.

I have a spreadsheet that I use to make teams for my weekly golf game. I enter each player and their handicap, and it determines:

    1) optimal number of groups based upon number of players
    2) number of players in each group

and then it basically assigns teams by using a "snake draft" type formula. For example, if I have 9 players:

    Team 1
    Lowest handicap player
    6th lowest handicap player
    7th lowest handicap player

    Team 2
    2nd lowest handicap player
    5th lowest handicap player
    8th lowest handicap player

    Team 3
    3rd lowest handicap player
    4th lowest handicap player
    9th lowest handicap player

The problem is, that doesn't always add up to the optimal teams (which would be that if we added up the sum of each team's handicaps, they would all be as close to equal as possible). We often have 5+ groups, and I wanted to have a system that allowed nobody to argue about the teams.

Is it possible to have Excel solve for what combination of players on each team results in the most-equal groups?

My advice would be to use a rotation system where each player has to have played on a team with every other player. The handicaps are supposed to make up for the difference in ability and if you have people griping, it is because they are not good sports. Remember the advice of a famous golfer, "I you play badly, play quickly!"
Any code provided by me should be tested on a copy or a mock up of your original data before applying it to the original. Some events in VBA cannot be reversed with the undo facility in Excel.
