And it does not matter which formula is being used(even a basic this cell = that cell in that other workbook, does not work). The links will not update, they show a #REF error until I open the source file(s). I know for a fact this was not the case in excel 2010. So is there a work around for this without using VBA to force open the other files?

I've actually found out part of the issue. This is an issue only dealing with tables. If the source file(s) is a part of a table, therefore the formula in the linked file shows the table reference vs the cell reference. The above issue will occur unless you open the source file. again this was not an issue with 2010.
