Need an unusual TODAY function

I've been working on a reporting tool for my office that, among other things, tracks the age of our open orders with customers. For a while now we've been copying in one of two formulas into an age column but not everyone in the office does it correctly. I'm looking for a formula i can keep in the "age" column that will show the difference between the "open date" and today's date (=today()-a2) or show the difference between the open and close date (=g3-a3).

If the order hasn't been closed then it obviously wont have a closed date in column G so I was hoping there is a formula that would work like "today-a2 unless there is a value in g3, then g3-a3"

Any ideas?
