Statistics - find the best matching fitting model ?

    Hello,

trying to solve the following statistical problem in excel:

    1. I got a gold standard y (for example: y = 100)
    2. I got three data sets x1,x2,x3: (for example x1=92;94;99 / x2=92;94;99;101;103 / x3=92;94;99;101;103;107;100;99;100)
please note: the data sets have similar data, but the number of data points are different. all variables are continuos.
    3. now I can calculate mean and sd for x1 - x2 - x3

I am looking for with a statistical test or function, to evaluate which dataset x1 - x2 - x3 has the closest mean AND the lowest SD to match the gold standard y ?

Any advice much appreciated. Many thanks, Marc

I am guessing you are not familiar with Excel's built in statistics functions (https://support.office.com/en-us/art...1-63f26a86c0eb ). Excel has a few different built in AVERAGE() functions for different spreadsheet scenarios (Mostly AVERAGE(), AVERAGEIFS()), and also a few different STDEV() functions to compute the standard deviation and VAR() functions for the variance.

Assuming you understand the statistics behind what you are describing, it should be as simple as choosing the correct AVERAGE() and STDEV()/VAR() functions and applying them to the data you have.

Hello, many thanks. To calculate the correct means , and SD are not the problem. My question is related to which tests I can use then to analyze my resulting means and SD to the best match of the gold standard variable ?

I am not certain I understand what kind of analysis you are trying to perform. In some way, it seems like you are wanting to some kind of hypothesis testing, but it is not clear to me what the null and alternate hypotheses are.

Since you have a single "standard" value followed by sample data, perhaps this is the kind of test you are trying to perform? http://stattrek.com/hypothesis-test/...?Tutorial=Stat
