Alternative to using an array in an Index or similar function?

I need a formula to generate the index_num in a Choose formula. The Match function in cell E4 does the trick, but I would prefer to actually embed the five numbers in C4:C8 in the Match function instead of using an array. I suspect that’s not possible with the match function. Is there an alternative function that would accomplish this goal? Thanks.
