To add odd and even columns with text in it

Hi friends,
I want to add range of even as well as odd columns in which there are text also with numbers how to solve this:-

eg

A B C D E F G H Total
A 2 3 B 5 6 7 8 16 - Total of even columns
1 F 3 4 G 6 7 8 11 - Total of odd columns
