Conditional Formatting to Remove Text

Hi there,

First time posting! I also primarily use Google Sheets but I assume the answer will still be the same.

I'm trying to use conditional formatting to remove text from cells if it meets certain conditions.

My spreadsheet currently looks like this:

A1: 11/27/2016 13:00
A2: 11/27/2016
A3: 11/28/2016 14:00

I'm trying to use the IF function within conditional formatting so that if a cell only contains a date *AND NO TIME*, it gets replaced with a blank cell. I want it to look like:

A1: 11/27/2016 13:00
A2:
A3: 11/28/2016 14:00

I've tried lots of variations but nothing seems to work. Would anyone out there have a solution for my problem?

Thanks so much!!

Re: Conditional Formatting to Remove Text

Welcome to Excel Forum.
Not sure that this will work in Google but in Excel cells A1 and A3 are actually numbers with decimals portions and A2 is a number without a decimal portion. In Excel you can select A1:A3 and apply the following formula as a conditional formatting rule where the format is set to change the font to white if true:
Formula: copy to clipboard

No luck.

It didn't work, and changing the font to white won't solve my problem either. I will be eventually exporting this spreadsheet into a .csv, so the text will still be picked up by an outside program even though the text is disguised as white

Re: Conditional Formatting to Remove Text

You may have your terms mixed up here. Conditional Formatting only changes the appearance of a cell - it's format - it does not change the actual cell contents.

The only way you can change a cell's actual contents, is to do it either manually, or through VBA. Other than that, you could use a helper cell/column to reference the cell you want to 'change", and apply he change there through a formula
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)

Unhappy Re: Conditional Formatting to Remove Text

You can't remove text with conditional format.
You need a formula in in different cell
Or you need VBA

again just to late with my reaction

Re: Conditional Formatting to Remove Text

Thank you for clearing that up for me! Do you think there's anyway to perform the type of task I'm looking for in Google scripts? I know a bit of PHP but I'm not sure how far that will get me.

Re: Conditional Formatting to Remove Text

As Ford suggests you might consider a second column that would only list the dates that have times associated. You would then export the second column (B in the attached file) instead of the original column (A) Use the following formula to populate the second column:
Formula: copy to clipboard
