    Custom cells

    Hi folks!

i have an issue with "format cells".

i have columns with numbers wich can be 1-digit, ore max. 4 digit.
Now, i want that all the numbers are 4-digit, so that „3“, for example, is „0003“.
I found a very good solution for this.
I go on „format cells“ – „custom“ and then i type „0000“ and in two workbooks it works just perfectly,
but in the others it does not?
Can anyone tell me what i am doing wrong??

see at the attached file, it work perfectly, but from row 13 it want??

    Thank you very much.

    Re: Custom cells

This issue is not with the format cells. I don't know if you have error checking turned off. I have error checking turned on, and row 13 down have little green triangles indicating one of Excel's error checks has detected a problem. The problem it highlights is "number stored as text". So, for whatever reason, some of those entries are numbers stored as text, and number formatting does not apply to text. You will need to convert those numbers stored as text to numbers. In the sheet, after data entry, you can put a 1 into a cell, copy that cell, select column A, paste special -multiply, and that will usually convert numbers stored as text to numbers. You might also look at your data entry/import/calculation step to see if you can do something different at that stage so the numbers come into Excel as numbers rather than text.

    Re: Custom cells

This usually happens where some numbers were entered as text. What you need to do is to convert them to real numbers.
Here is one way of fixing this
    1. Click on any empty cell and copy it.
    2. Highlight cells that in Col "A" and use Paste Special, and choose "Add" from Operation section and click Ok. This will convert all cells to real numbers.
    3. Now you can apply Custom formatting 0000
