External Link to another workbook issue

I am pulling cell data from one workbook to another via an external link.

When I establish the link the formula shows as:
Please Login or Register to view this content.
That works fine and when I make a change in "Tournament Register" cell G3 it reflects the change properly in the second workbook.

While I run the tournament everything works fine, however after saving the workbooks and sometime later when I run another tournament the link has changed to include a path and the link no longer works.
Some of the cells contain the actual path name where the workbooks exist - for example:
Please Login or Register to view this content.
but the link still does not work.

and some have a path name I don't recognize:
Please Login or Register to view this content.
** When I look at drive C: in "File Explorer" I don't see that path - I do not see "Owner" folder I only see up to the
Please Login or Register to view this content.
    path.

So I have to redo all of the links each time I run a tournament. Is there any way to keep the link the same as on initial setup?

My Workbooks are too large to upload to the forum.

    Thanks for any advice.

Hmm, I had set my profile as Excel 2003 previously, but updated it after I bought new computer with 2016 excel. I just checked and my profile did say 2003, so I have updated it again. Must not have took the first time.

    Thanks for the heads up.

in that case you need to tick "show hidden folders"

Re: External Link to another workbook issue

Thanks for the tip. I have ticked the box to show hidden folders, files and drives and now I see the full path but the last folder named "Excel" does not contain my workbook and only has one file named "Excel15.xlb"

However, that is not a real issue for me - I still don't understand why the external link does not work when the reference includes the full path even when it references the correct path where the workbooks reside.

    Thanks

OK, I'll see if I can duplicate it in small workbook.

Re: External Link to another workbook issue

    Hi Tim,

I think the issue is operator error. It seems if I click "Don't Update" links when opening the workbook it works fine if I have the linked to book open but if that book is not open it will put in the whole path in the external reference, which seems to cause a problem.

If I go ahead and click "Update Links" whether the referenced book is open or closed I don't see an issue.

Thanks for you help and I'll mark this thread solved.

    Best Regards,
    Pongmeister
