Question copy cell text based on drop down value selected from another cell

In Sheet1, cell A1, I enter the codes I am working on. In cell A2, I created a data validation so it is easier for me to select from the list what the status of the code I am working on (i.e. In Progress, Done, Researching, etc.). The data of the data validation for Sheet1 cell A2 is located in Sheet2.

What I wanted is in Sheet3, in column A, I want to list the statuses based on the data validation I created (ie. In Progress, Done, Researching, etc.). I want in Sheet3 column B to automatically populate the code (somewhat like copying the text) that is in Sheet1 cell A1 to the corresponding status I selected in the dropdown list in Sheet1 cell A2.

For example, in Sheet1 cell A1, I entered code 238 and in cell A2 (still in Sheet1), from the dropdown list, I selected the status "Done."

What I want to see in Sheet3 in column B next to the status "Done" (written in column A) is code 238. I want the sheet3 to list all the codes that have their corresponding status in sheet1. It will be a good way for me to quickly glance what codes that is in a particular status so I can tend to them right away.

    please help ...

    Hello,

you can do this with a pivot table. Your data in Sheet1 needs to have headers, like "Code" and "Status" in row 1. Best would be to turn the data in Sheet1 into an Excel Table, so after adding the headers, click a cell in the data and then go Insert > Table. Now you can click Insert > Pivot table. By default this will go on a new sheet. Drag the Status to the rows, then drag the Code to the rows area. Whenever you change the data in Sheet1, click the pivot table and refresh it.

Re: copy cell text based on drop down value selected from another cell

Thank you for the tip. The format I made for Sheet1 is instead of column labels at the top and the data under it (vertical) my column headers or labels are in column A and the data (the codes and statuses) are in columns B, C, D, and so on.

    For example
The header or label named "Codes" is in cell A2 then the codes I am working on is entered in cells B2, C2, E2, (depending on how many I need to work with within the month)
The header or label named "Status" is in cell A3 and the dropdowns list are in B3, C3, E3, respectively

Post a sample file. Some Excel things work better if data is organized in columns, not rows.
