Help with counting text cells

Help with CountIF functions in Excel 2003
Please can anyone help!

I am trying to enter a countif function in order to calculate the number of yes & no's to male & females!

In one column I have 'Y & N' & in a 2nd column 'M & F'. I need to be able to calulate the number of Male Yes & No' & the number of female Yes & No.

Hope this make sense.

I have been using this function of add the number of females & males with this function:

=COUNTIF(K4:K100,"*"&P20&"*")

I don't know if this is possible or If I need to alter the way I collate this data.

Any advice will be gratefully appreciated.

8	F	Y

This formula entered in F2 and copied down:

=SUMPRODUCT(--(A$2:A$10=D2),--(B$2:B$10=E2))

I have tried this but returns a value of 0! My knowledge of excel is limited. I have attached a sample of the spreadsheet I use if this helps in a previous reply.

Guessing your requirement:.

in Q5

=COUNTIFS($K$4:$K$46,"YES",$L$4:$L$46,"MALE")

Other values are just variants on above: i.e. Change "YES" to "NO" and "Male" to "FEMALE" in the required cells, and change the ranges.

e.g Q14

=COUNTIFS($L$4:$L$46,"Male",$N$4:$N$46,"Y")
