Excel wont add a vertical column of figures but will add the same figures horizontally

I am using Excel 2013 on a Windows 7 pc I have a spreadsheet containing a table (1) using COUNTIF formulas to calculate the number of various incidences certain values come from another table (2) on the same sheet.

The table (1) is formatted as number but however hard I try I cannot get a SUM formula to total up all or part of the vertical column, although I can get a SUM formula to total up the Horizontal row
