Alkey yours almost worked , I get 301
But my answer is 255

Okay, describe what you have in column A. Do you have a heading(s)? Which is the first cell with that formula? What is the formula? Where has it been copied down to? Do you have anything else in that column?

The formula in E1 should be:
=COUNTIF(D:D,"?*")
not COUNTA.
