Formula to force excel to stop recognising ? as a wildcard?

    Hi all,

In the attached example I have a list of project names, some of which are duplicates. In order to remove those duplicates using a subsequent formula I need to assign them each a new number, which the formula in column A is doing.

However, the formula in column A seems to recognize the '?' in B14 as a wildcard and is not giving that release a new number, instead continuing the count of 4.

I want to know whether there's a way to get the formula in column A to no longer recognize the '?' as a wildcard, I'm happy to insert new columns if necessary.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Chris

    Hi Punnam,

Yeah I accidentally sent before I attached the file and now I'm being really thick and can't work out how to attach it. Any ideas?
