    Question Running difference?

    Hey everyone

I am a Virtual Assistant and I have a new client that would like a running total of my hours in one column and also for it to be subtracted from my totals for the month in another. I have come up with the formula you see in the jpg but that seems rather long. Is there an easier formula that I am missing?

Thanks in advance for any help.

an actual workbook with a small sample of data and demonstrating your desired result would be really helpful

    Re: Running difference?

What I need to do is input the hours in column B for the week. In column C, is the running total of hours LEFT in the plan. The total at the bottom are simple because it is just the totals hours - hours left...

Right now, what I have is:
    C5 is =SUM($C$3-B5)
    C6 is =SUM($C$3-(B5+B6)
    C7 is =SUM($C$3-(B5+B6+B7))
    C8 is =SUM($C$3-(B5+B6+B7+B8))
    C9 is =SUM($C$3-(B5+B6+B7+B8+B9))

The plan hours is 40 in C3. I am going to have to add the hours for next week, for example in B7. This week I worked 3.2 and the week before 5.4.

    Thanks for all your help.

    Re: Running difference?

    Disregard. Working the problem now.

Try this in C5 and drag down:

    =$C$3-SUM($B$5:B5)
If you want it to only show a value if the contiguous cell in column B is not blank, try this:

    =IF(B5<>0,$C$3-SUM($B$5:B5),"")

    Re: Running difference?

    Why not just $C$3-SUM($B$5:$B$9)?

Or if you want to add in values to the range B5:B9, make a named range that will automatically update your total hours formula.
