Question Is this possible? to format a cell based on other cell?

Hello, please excuse my bad English. I've googled but found nothing..

    Say, I have 2 cells:

    Cell A1: January 2015
    Cell A2: *empty*

I want when I type in a number to cell A2, the number then turns to *number*-Jan-15. The Jan-15 is January 15 from cell A1.

So for example if I type 1 into cell A2:

    Cell A1: January 2015
    Cell A2: 1-Jan-15

    Thank you..!

    welcome to the forum.

slight correction to your English, it doesn't look like you want to change the format, but the value.

It is not possible to type a number into a cell and have it also reference another cell automatically, but you could type your number into a third cell (A3 for example), and then input this formula in A2:
    Formula: copy to clipboard
    =date(year(a1),month(a1),day(a3))

    (untested)

as for the 1-Jan-15 format, you should be able to find that in the format selector in the home ribbon.

if that doesn't work or you have another question about it please upload a sample of your workbook.

    Hi, welcome to the forum

I too, am not really understanding what you want

You have a date in A1
You enter a value in A2
Then you want A2 to show something else?

You can either have data in a cell (value or text) or a formula, you cannot have both

perhaps try explaining what you want again?

Hello, thank you for the replies.

So I have this (please note I'm new to excel, so I'm just learning):
    excel.jpg

Is there any way I can change this: [$-409]d-mmm-yy;@ as shown in the screenshot I uploaded, so when I entered, for example, 16, it will be 16-Jan-2015? the month and year is the same as stated in the cell under the MONTHLY EXPENSE SUMMARY cell.
