a conditional formula across 2 columns

I want to add all those values over a number of rows in column A that have the word 'inactive' against them in column B. Can someone provide the formula please. When I looked up SumX and tried to apply it it would not work.
    Many thanks
    Dominique

    Hi. Try this

    =SUMIF(B:B,"Inactive",A:A)
