    Automatic conversions

    Hi everyone,

As I stated b4 I am trying to make a data base for my wife for baking etc, She is used to the metric system and I the old Canadian and USA measurement system, ounces etc.

SOOOOOO question is: Can I make a spread sheet that, with the click of one button so to speak can I change allllllll the measurements from the old way to metric?

Do I have to take an excel class in University to achieve this?

    Any suggestions welcome

    Re: Automatic conversions

you can do the conversion do you want to have two columns - one for Metric one for Canadian ?

if you put the measurement type in a column - then you can use this to look up the alternative measure

To replace all the measurements- would need a macro - which I did write quite a while back - but would take a long while to try it again

I would suggest just having the two columns

You could have those hidden once you have entered one set of values for the recipe

you may then have a cell you select which measurement to populate the visible column with

    Re: Automatic conversions

thanks for the insite I had thought about two columns but then thought it would be too cluttered but I will look at that option.......a macro would be good hint hint hahahahah kidding I would know know how to use it. I am a newbie at this stuff but find it stimulating for the brain.

    Re: Automatic conversions

Dont really need 2 columns, if you have the measurement and the system, you can use 1 column to convert, based on the value and the system.

These are a few of the measures available...
    Gram "g"
    Slug "sg"
    Pound mass (avoirdupois) "lbm"
    U (atomic mass unit) "u"
    Ounce mass (avoirdupois) "ozm"
If you have something like this....
    A
    B
    C
    1
    10
    ounce
    0.35274

    C1=CONVERT(A1,IF(B1="ounce","g","ozm"),IF(B1="ounce","ozm","g"))
This would work for grams and ounces, and you could have a drop-down in B1 to restrict entries

    Re: Automatic conversions

I was not sure how that convert() worked with things like fluid onces
Canadian 12-imperial-fluid-ounce bottles, which are 341 mL each. American brewers package their beer in 12-US-fluid-ounce bottle, which are 355 mL each.

I know I had a few issues with a setup I made for Ireland a while back, with US, English and Metric measures, Cups , fluid ounces etc , sure there were other issues as well

Perhaps if you included a few samples along with your expected outcome?
