Need help w/formula to distinguish taxable from non-taxable idems

    Hello fellow Excel users
If someone knowledgeable on this could help, it would be greatly appreciated. I made up work orders on Excel 2010 for my motorcycle repair business.
I have a list of parts that need to be taxed. So, I sum up the price of the parts in a cell. Then under that I put in a formula =(that sum)*tax rate.
My problem is: sometimes I need to purchase an idem or part from a local business that taxes me at the counter. So, I need to install a formula that identifies that
part as already taxed & doesn't multiply the tax rate just for that idem.
I could probably reference that information myself but, I don't know how to word what I am trying to do properly.
As I mentioned earlier, any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank You
    Todd K.

Perhaps you could put a data validation cell next to each part to indicate Tax_Exempt and that allows only Yes/No.
Then your tax calculation formula could use something like this:

Is that something you can work with?

    Thanks for the input Ron,
That might be enough information to steer me in the right direction. I'll do some home work on SUMIF formulas. I own a book on Excel 2010 formulas & one on power programing w/VBA. Before asking this question on this forum, I didn't know what to look up.
    Thanks again
