is the difference, I suspect that $D$4 has a number in it, whereas TEXT(Log!$D$2:$D$9999,"yyyy") has, well, text in it.

However, "... this would work: ... Yet this would not:" doesn't give many clues as to what it isn't doing that it should, or doing that it shouldn't.
