That is not working, they are all coming out saying "indirect"

No they're not... Did you notice my amendment? The formula refers (now) to K1, they used to refer to A1. However, this is better, as it takes into account the possibility of a "%" or a "&", etc at the start of the cell.

=IF(ISNUMBER(LEFT(K1,1)*1),"Direct","Indirect")
