I need a formula in column J that will say "direct" if column K starts with a number or "indirect" if column K starts with a letter.

Do you mean the first cell in range in col K?

That is not working, they are all coming out saying "indirect"

No they're not... Did you notice my amendment? The formula refers (now) to K1, they used to refer to A1. However, this is better, as it takes into account the possibility of a "%" or a "&", etc at the start of the cell.

However you may try
=IF(ISNUMBER(LEFT(K1,1)*1),"Direct","Indirect")
