Help with formula - v look up ????

Hello lovely people
My first post - yay
Be gentle with me !!!!!
I have something that I could do with some help on
I have quite a large spreadsheet of data
I don't think what I'm trying to do is difficult but I haven't found the solution when I've tried
I have a column a with three or four different categories a,b,c,d - there are multiples of each in this column each row has a financial value
I need a formula in a separate cell which identifies that the row contains category a then finds the financial value and sums all these values
Then same for b etc
I would be very grateful for your help
Many thanks in advance
F

Re: Desperately seeking the solution

Your post does not comply with Rule 1 of our Forum RULES. Your post title should accurately and concisely describe your problem, not your anticipated solution.

Use terms appropriate to a Google search. Poor thread titles, like Please Help, Urgent, Need Help, Formula Problem, Code Problem, and Need Advice will be addressed according to the OP's experience in the forum: If you have less than 10 posts, expect (and respond to) a request to change your thread title. If you have 10 or more posts, expect your post to be locked, so you can start a new thread with an appropriate title.

Also, attach a Workbook
(please do not post pictures or links to worksheets)
• Click Advanced (next to quick post),
• Scroll down until you see "Manage Attachments",
• Click that then select "add files" (top right corner).
• Click "Select Files" find your file, click "open" click "upload"
• Once the upload is completed the file name will appear below the input boxes in this window.
• Click "Done" at bottom right to close the Attachment Manager.
• Click "Submit Reply"

sounds like you need to look at trying the SUMIF() function?
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools
3. Click on the star if you think someone helped you
