Combine 2 text columns

Hi Guys

I am trying to combine 2 columns.

First Column had the persons full name i.e Joe Bloggs and the 2nd Column has the status of an account, i.e New, Lost etc

When I use excel 2010 formulas it will not calculate and basically just leaves the formula I have typed in the cell.

Can anyone offer any advice?
