Count or Countif formula

I was had a spreadsheet that had a list names and there was a formula that took all of the names and designated a number to them to count them:
Tom 1
Tom 2
Randy 1
Ed 1
Randy 2
Ed 2
Tom 3
Ed 3
I can not for the life of me remember how to re write this...

May be, to have it done for all at once - use pivot table? just remember to have a header(s) above your data.

=COUNTIF($A$1:A1,A1,A$1:A1)

In B1 and copied down.

Why? COUNTIFS is designed for more than a single criterion. It won't fail with one, but it's nevertheless unnecessary. Why did you think that would help?
