How to Detect an Exam Grade that Contains a * When Using VLOOKUP

When I try to detect a grade that is followed by a * e.g. A* it sees this as a wild card and counts all values that contain A. In the example I have worked around this but I wondered if there is an actual way of detecting * grades directly without resorting to manipulation?
I have included a spreadsheet with data.
Many thanks if you are able to help.

If you want to do a search for text that includes wildcard characters, and you want to find the literal character, instead of using the action of the wildcard, then place a tilde "~" in front of the character.

e.g., to find "A*", search for "A~*"

Cheers,

This worked for me....

=COUNTIFS($AC$4:$AC$86,B$3,$AB$4:$AB$86,$A4)

in B4, copied down and across
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)

should do it. It can be dragged to include cells that don't contain the * as it will return the cell value as it is if it doesn't contain a *.
