Lets say I have the following formula
=sumifs(A:A,criteria_range1,criteria1,criteria_range2,criteria2)+sumifs(B:B,criteria_range1,criteria1,criteria_range2,criteria2)
Why wont the following work?
=sumifs(A:B,criteria_range1,criteria1,criteria_range2,criteria2)+sumifs(B:B,criteria_range1,criteria1,criteria_range2,criteria2)
Is there a work around?

I think your ranges have to be of equal size.
