    Lookup issues

    Hello.
I have a grade tracking sheet but the lookup is not working properly.
There are two sets of grades, and then a column is needed to "track" the difference.

Column A - Current Grade (alpha)
Column B - Expected Grade (alpha)
Column C - "On Track" (numeric e.g Current C, Expected A on track would read -2)

Rows are allocated to a student each.
    Grades - A*, A, B, C, D, E, F, U (Highest first)

I am happy for there to be a separate lookup elsewhere on the sheet.

    Thank you in advance!!

Easily done - I do it all the time, as I am a teacher. I'll put something together and attach it here for you within the next ten minutes.

Here you are. The lookup table could be anywhere and could, of course, be hidden.

    Re: Lookup issues

    Hi, Bryony!

What substitute does is look for the string "A*" in the referenced cell (if that cell contains it), and replaces it with "A~*". It does this before the VLOOOKUP is calculated. Without it, "A*" would be seen as "A" followed by a wildcard, so it would return the value of "A" instead of "A*" from the lookup table. The "~" (tilde) character tells Excel that this really is "A*" and not "A" + a wildcard. Hope this explains it!
