It's extremely powerful. As a result, it can be massive overkill for some things, and extremely complicated for others, but it has some very useful features. Occasionally it's worth using for even simple pivots because by creating an OLAP cube as the source data for the pivot(s) it allows you to use things like asymmetric pivot tables (i.e. allows you to hide unwanted columns from the table).
