Conditional Formatting Pie Charts (non-numeric values)

How do I create a pie chart where

    1. There is no numeric value to be plotted; only color of the cells (color can be repeated for each slice)
    2. Each slice is colored depending on conditional formatting (colors) in the aforementioned cell. The colors in the cell can be red, yellow, or green but will change from project to project. Right now I am coloring the cell amateurishly by typing red and formatting the font and cell fill as red (so you can't see the text in the cell). The X-values are for example:

    Formulation
    Process
    Quality

    Thank you!

Use Cell value greater than 0 and set the range for each colour. (yeah I'm Australian and we use colour, not color).

This way you can place values in the cells and the conditional formatting will 'colour' the cell in the range when a value is in that cell.

PS: Only issue with this approach is it does use a numeric value to create the chart with.

Re: Conditional Formatting Pie Charts (non-numeric values)

Thanks AYdata (or should I say - mate ).

I have a multifold issue here (I think). I am developing a risk assessment. Each factor (formulation, process, etc) is to be associated with a risk level designated by a color (Red, Yellow, and Green).

Problem 1: How do I create a drop down menu with just colors? Is it possible? No text, no numbers...just color. Right now, I am amateurishly creating a drop down in a separate reference sheet and conditionally formatting the cell by typing the word red, then changing color of cell and font to red so you don't see anything but the fill color). The active sheet then pulls the color drop down from the reference sheet. The problem with this is....

Problem 2: When I go to make a pie chart to show the color scheme, I am stuck because I don't know how to make a pie chart with non-numeric colors. No text, no numbers. Make sense???

Re: Conditional Formatting Pie Charts (non-numeric values)

Your 'Risk Assessment" would still require some level of numerical value to be substantial in it's display (ie: 50% green and 35% yellow and 15% red) in order to be a valid chart.

I am assuming you want just the words "Formulation, Process and Quality" to form the basis of the chart values. This could be done using a COUNTIF formula on a secondary cell and chart on those values. So perhaps a count of the occurences of the words would work for you.

I have modified the sheet I uploaded previously which should now suit your needs.
