Vertical (Value) Axis and Durations (Time)

    Hello, everyone.

I have created a lengthy Excel 2010 workbook, and I'm at the summarizing point. I wanted to use 1 chart to show average call duration in mm:ss (on vertical axis) for 9 dates (on horizontal axis) between 2 departments. I highlighted the area with data, like always, and selected a simple line chart.

    \1

The first chart on the left is the result with only 0:00 for the y-axis.

I removed the "AVERAGE BC CALL: CSC" data to create chart 2 (middle), and it worked!

I created a third chart with only "AVERAGE BC CALL: CSC" and it reverted back to the original chart (minus the AST data).

From what I've read, Excel charts deal with times in strange ways, but I'm baffled as to why it works in one instance and not another.

Hard to say from a picture (if you can upload a spreadsheet, Go Advanced> Manage Attachments). Did you look at the Series data for graph 1 (Design tab>Select Data)?

Re: Vertical (Value) Axis and Durations (Time)

Okay, here's what's happening. Even though they all look like ordinary times because they are formatted as time, some are days long (days are integers in Excel, time is decimals). For example, 1.0011 and 0.0011 will format as time (m:ss) as 1:35. I copied and pasted your times into general format starting at M3 so you can see what's really there.

I changed your formulas to include MOD(value, 1) which removes integers and keeps the decimal. So C4 now is
    =MOD('AST Mar 25'!I1,1)
See attachment. Does this work for you?

Thank you, ChemistB! Thanks to your eagle eye I was able to find that 1 sheet out of my 18 was in time and the rest in date/time. That messed everything up. I reproduced that page and now all is good. Thanks for reminding me of the MOD function too.
