Question Basic chart but just can't get it to work... :(

    G'day everyone,

My 'Search-Fu' must be on the blink as I can't seem to find an answer to my question anywhere on the Internet so if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

I'm a teacher and am trying to create a simple chart where I enter my class results each week into a spreadsheet for simple formative tests and then the next day I can display a chart showing an anonymous chart of improvement in class average. Class terms are 9-11 weeks long and the formative tests vary between basic 5 question spelling tests to 'speed' calculations up to 25 questions.

Making a spreadsheet that updates each week when I update it has me bamboozled (and the stupid thing is that I'm the bloke that is usually helping OTHER people with the IT questions... )

    Any help, pointers?

    B

    Hi B,

It might just be me being a bit dim, but it's not actually clear from your post above what it is you need....

You can use a pivot table / chart.

The example contains 2 tables. 1 should a calculated factor for comparison of different length tests.
The other shows the average of each test with the ability to filter on test length

Just re-read my post and I'm the dim one...

(I meant to add more details but got distracted by small mini-me asking for help with homework)

    Example:

Each day 28 kids do short quiz for revision. Teacher records results in spreadsheet. At end of the week teacher displays a 'bar' chart (or similar) showing the results in an anonymous manner to avoid embarrassment. Results displayed could just be the 'average' class result or more detailed (full class or number of kids above the average, etc.)
The next week the chart would be updated again during the week and, when displayed, would show 'Week' two results on the chart as well and, hopefully, the improved averages. The idea is to have the class 'own' the results and strive to do better (reward system of stamps/stickers goes hand in hand with this).
    Does that help?

I'll check this when I get home on a PC. Thanks for the assistance. I've put more details into the post above as my first post was a big vague...

Andy, that looks like it's on the right track but I tried to fiddle with it to get it closer to what I needed but completely goofed it up...

How difficult 'should' it be to adapt it to what I was looking for? I didn't think it would be that hard but I couldn't get it going...

It should not be difficult to adapt. The pivot table data source is simply a record per student identifying the test, score and maximum score.
The 2 tables show how to display all test results or an average exam result.

What part of the adapting are you having a problem with?
