    Overlapping bars

    Hi there,

I am wanting to present some data using overlapping bars where each of the two series has a different width bar. I have managed to do this by selecting 100% overlap and by manually widening the borders (see first image below).

    Graph1.png

However, another set of data has both negative and positive values and in this case the bars run over the axis due to the thick borders (see second image below).

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can acheive the same effect without having to widen the borders??

Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

    Hi Anwi

I've attached a sample in which I used a secondary axis. Is this of any use to you?

    Hi Anwi,

How about disabling the borders and increasing the gap of the overlapping data series?

    Increasing the width: Gap.jpg

    Disabling the border: Border.jpg

Disabling the border ensures that it doesn't go beyond the x axis and increasing the with adjusts the space that's now missing with the disabled border. But this doesn't spill beyond the axis.

    best regards, Dims

Thanks Stephen, that's exactly what I need. I've figured out how to add a secondary axis, but how did you then increase the width of one series?

    Cheers,

    Anwi

    Thanks for the suggestion Dims.

The only problem is that when I increase the gap it increases the width of both data series, whereas I want different widths for each series.

    Cheers,

    Anwi

    Re: Overlapping bars

    Hi Anwi,

I went back to the Excel file attached to see if I did something wrong earlier. So I copied the first sheet (ref "Original problem maybe" worksheet) and modified it to reflect the incorrect display you'd highlighted in the picture.

Copied this into third worksheet and resolved it ("Origianl problem modified" worksheet) and you'll notice how the width differs from the original worksheet even.

I only fooled around with the same properties I'd talked about earlier.

Funny thing - When I applied the formats first it affected only one data item from the series. I clicked on another and only then did it apply to all the items in the same series. Weird.

    Re: Overlapping bars

    Hi Anwi

I achieved the overlap and different widths by selecting one on the series, setting its overlap to 100% and adjusting the Gap Width to be larger (move the slider to the right). Then by selecting the other series, the overlap will already be set to 100%, but you can adjust the Gap Width to something smaller (move the slider to the left). I have attached a screen shot that will hopefully help to explain it. Again, hope this helps!!

    Regards
    Stephen.
