Chart X axis values coming up as black blob

Hello All,
Really simple question
I have 16000 dates coming from a pivot table as my x axis.
This causes it to freak out.
How do i get it to appear as just years instead of it trying to print all 16000 dates?

I'm not sure if it matters, but is this a line chart or an XY scatter plot?

Have you tried changing the number format for the x axis so it only shows years?

Its a line. its set to just year but i still get 4 large black lines across the bottom.

unfortunatley they are not its just a list of dates from 2007 to now. how can i group them in the x axis label without grouping the actual data?
