Bar-chart series overlap due to Secondary Axsis

I have two datasets that I'm plotting together as a bar-chart. They have significantly different scales so I need to plot one on a secondary axis. But as soon as I apply one to a secondary axis excel (2010) removes the separation and plots series overlapping each other or on top of each other. I want to have the data series side by side with a small separation between them but this option doesn't seem to be there. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
